The composer's work

THE COMPOSER

The first step in a film composer's work is to work closely with directors and producers. This collaboration is essential to understanding their vision, the emotions they want to convey and the nuances of the story. The composer must translate these ideas into music, creating a unique soundtrack that enhances the visual impact.

MUSICAL COMPOSITION

Musical composition is at the heart of our work. This includes the creation of musical themes, motifs and also orchestration. We use a wide variety of instruments and composition software to bring our ideas to life. The creative process is often a delicate balance between artistic originality and understanding of storytelling.

Once the music is composed, it goes through the editing and mixing stage. This is where the magic happens, as music is integrated into the images to create an immersive cinematic experience. Mixing is crucial to ensure that the music fits together harmoniously, without dominating or being overwhelmed by dialogue and sound effects.

THE QUALITIES OF THE COMPOSER

Being a screen composer requires a set of skills and qualities.

Artistic sensitivity is the first quality to possess. Understanding the narrative and emotions conveyed by the film or series is essential to creating music that resonates not only with the images but also with the viewers. The music should be in sync with the characters, themes and key moments of the story.

We must master composition, orchestration and arrangement to create music that enriches the story. Today, we must also master computer tools as well as recording and mixing techniques.

Adaptability, listening and communication are also crucial skills to flourish as a screen composer. Each project is unique, with its own musical requirements. As a composer, we must be able to move from one genre to another, from one musical style to another, depending on the needs of the project. Collaboration is a keystone of our work. We must be open to feedback from directors and producers, and trust their vision as it guides our creation.
